Music in Spain this year

Live performances by some of the top British singers and orchestras in Spain

For me, there is nothing to beat hearing music live. If you feel the same, then Spain is the country for you, as almost everywhere inside and in the open air (when the weather permits), you will find some sort of live music event, ranging from classical to hard rock, lyrical to pop. Nor does it usually cost a fortune to get seats, except that is for the major festivals, where the prices have increased substantially since I came to live here nine years’ ago.

This spring and summer, Spain is welcoming many a “golden oldie”: musicians and singers from the UK and elsewhere. I am subscribed to several mailing lists for music here, and I admit I am rather surprised at the numbers who are coming here to entertain the Spanish and those who live and visit Spain.

May in Girona, Catalonia
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Pinchas Zuckerman will be performing near me, in Girona, the capital of the region in which I live, meaning that in under an hour I can be there for what promises to be a wonderful evening.

May in Barcelona, Catalonia
Bruce Springsteen, aged 66, will be heading to Barcelona with the E Street Band on 14th May for the first of just three concerts in Spain. It will be held at FC Barcelona’s ground, el Camp Nou followed on the 17th in San Sebástian, and Madrid on 21st May.

At Palau St Jordi, a rather younger singer, Adele, will be playing to around 20,000 people on 25th May – seats sold out long ago.

June in Madrid
On 2nd June (a date very important to me, as it is my eldest son’s birthday) Sir Paul McCartney will be in Madrid, playing at Atletico Madrid’s Vicente Calderon stadium; his first appearance in Spain in 12 years. Now 73, he will bring his “One to One” world tour, with both old Beatles’ favourites and solo songs from his long musical career.

Another major event (not featuring British musicians, but I still feel it should be mentioned) is on 29th June at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu (Real Madrid’s Stadium). That night there will be an evening of homage to the great Placido Domingo, with guests Andrea Bocelli, a wonderful young Spanish singer, who I have seen live in Barcelona, Pablo Alborán, il Volo and many other world class singers, some still to be announced. I could be there in about four hours’ by taking the fast AVE train from Girona to Madrid – and in fact that is probably what I will do.

July and August at Cap Roig, Calella de Palafrugell, Catalonia
I am so fortunate to live just a few kilometres away from this stunning location in the open air, high up on a promontory surrounded by a botanic garden which leads down to the sea. The summer festival held here every year attracts some of the world’s greatest performers. and this year is no exception.

Rod Stewart, now a young 71, will be singing at this event on 9th July. The Corrs will be singing on 15th August and on 17th August, Status Quo will be playing to the audience of around 2000. I should mention that the brilliant guitarist Santana, aged 68, will also be there on 23rd July.

August in Marbella
Julio Iglesias, aged 72, will be performing at the Auditori de Marbella on 5th August.

This is just a taste of what music you can in enjoy in Spain this year. Of course, there are thousands of smaller venues dotted all around the country, which host jazz, blues, rock, flamenco and pop and every other kind of music that exists. As far as I am concerned, live music is so much better than CDs or streaming… go along and join in a celebration of the wonderful world of music.
